Winning Rhinos charge ahead with confidence

01 Jul, 2009 12:44 PM
THE winter chill has brought out the best in the Wyndham City Rhinos.

The Rhinos are starting to hit top gear in what is the toughest period of the Victorian Rugby Union season.

Rhinos coach Darren Taylor is pleasantly surprised with his side's form over the past month.

"Everything is cruising along OK," he told the Banner.

"We're starting to put a few wins together now.

"The boys are playing real good rugby at the moment."

The rampaging Rhinos crushed Southern Districts Pirates 55-7 at Henry Turner Reserve in Footscay on Saturday.

The prolific Saione Ahomana was by far the best player on both sides with three tries, two try assists and a mountain of defensive work.

"He stole a lot of ball and was very good in his support play," Taylor said. "He was also defensively very strong.

"He was all over the park."

Logan Kelly created a lot of drive through the middle of the park.

The lock forward brushed aside Pirates defenders with ease to gain valuable territory.

He did not neglect his defensive duties and was smart in the line-outs and strong in the scrum.

Rhinos inside-centre Lance King produced several bone-rattling tackles to force errors.

One of the highlights was John Armstrong, a convert from football who is finding his niche at the Rhinos in his third season.

"He's been outstanding," Taylor said. "He's got a lot of speed, he's got young legs and he's keen to get out there.

"In the past few weeks he's really kicked on." Taylor was pleased with the Rhinos' form through June.

He believes that if his team can maintain its performances until the end of this month it should have no trouble booking a finals berth.

"This is definitely the hardest part of the year with the weather, work commitments, injuries and suspensions.

"If you can get through this period with a few wins you'll do all right coming into the semi-finals.

"We're growing every game as a team and as a club.

"We're taking little steps at a time."

The Rhinos will lock horns with Premier 2 ladder leaders Moorabbin Rams away on Saturday.

They head in with confidence after having beaten the Rams earlier in the season.

"That's going to be a tough one," Taylor said.

"It will let us know where we are at this stage of the year."
