A NEW-look VU-Western Lightning will take to the court in the opening round of the Victorian Netball League's Holden Cruze Cup against the North East Blaze tonight.
Having finished just outside the finals on percentage last season, the side has undergone several changes.
Coach Joy Grubb said: "It will be a very different side from last year when we take the court.
"We have had players left and others retire, so not everything is going to happen quickly.
"I'm very excited to get back into it and see how we go."
Along with the new members in the squad, the team has battled injuries throughout the preseason.
"We had a lot of injuries which has meant that we have only had eight players to play during the preseason," Grubb said.
"While it has meant that we haven't been able to do anything that we would have liked, it means that players have been getting more court time.
"No one likes sitting on the bench."
The additions means a new-look defence will take to the court.
"Four of our five new players are defenders, so it has taken them a while to gel together," Grubb said.
"We still have Melbourne Vixens player Brooke Thompson to come back from injury as well to add to our defence."
Grubb and new skipper Dani Stewart have again set their sights on finals, as they look for some of the younger players to step up.
"Hopefully we can make finals, but we can't really judge the other teams are until the proper season starts," Grubb said.
"We will be looking for the likes of Kelsey Browne and Fiona Themann to step up and play some good netball.
"Kelsey is part of the Australian under-19 side and has really grown and matured, while Fiona, who is one of the new recruits, is a real asset."
Grubb is confident her team can get off to a winning start.
"We have beaten the North East Blaze in the preseason, and if we play the way we should then we should win."
