Revenge is sweet for young Devils

23 Sep, 2009 05:00 AM
WERRIBEE Devils exacted sweet revenge over the Knox Raiders and pounced on the Victorian Junior Basketball League under-16 boys state title.

The Devils lost at the same stage to the Raiders two years ago, but killed two birds with one stone in atoning for that gut-wrenching defeat and confirming their status as the premier boys under-16 team in Victoria with a 56-46 grand final win at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre.

The victory was two years in the making, coach Paul Jones said. "The players are very excited about their achievement," he told the Banner. It was fairly sweet revenge."

Jones has coached basketball teams for the past 25 years. On a local level, he believes this "well rounded" team is one of the best.

"It's definitely up there with the best junior teams I have coached," he said.

"The work ethic and belief they've built up is fantastic. We had a lot of injuries and the key was they've all played a role and answered the challenge."

The most valuable player in the grand final came from an unlikely source in Nicholas Morda.

The youngster in the No.21 singlet bounced off the substitutes' bench to play the best 17 minutes of his short career.

The guard injected life into the Devils late in the game with 13 points, two assists and a steal.

"Nick is one of the most improved players in our group," Jones said. ''He played the game of his life.

"He came off the bench and created momentum for the team."

Josh Oswald did the bulk of the 'big' duties. The forward/centre with a huge "work ethic" reeled in 13 rebounds to go with 13 points.

Michael Luxford missed eight weeks with a broken arm before returning to the line-up for the biggest game of the season.

The point guard also produced 13 points - the Devils lucky number in this victory - to be a valuable contributor as they outscored their opponents 22-15 in the last quarter.

"They're ecstatic," Jones said of the triumph. "It makes all the hard work worthwhile."

The winning team comprised Josh Oswald, Aiden Scolaro, Jordan Battistin, Ben Swann, Nicholas Morda, Richard Draghiciu, Michael Luxford, Mark Orr, William Soonalole, Deng Riak.

The Werribee She-Devils received their women's division 1 premiership pennant at the Big V presentation night last week.

The Victorian Basketball League also revealed its award winners with She-Devils playing coach Sharon Grieve named the most valuable player and selected in the All-Star team at forward, and teen sensation Stacey Barr collecting the rising star award.

The Werribee Devils forward Aaron Marsh was named in the men's division 1 All-Star line-up after a fantastic season.
