Tigers on pace against fancied opponent

24 Feb, 2010 03:00 AM

WERRIBEE will be looking for some early runs when it goes out to bat in an evenly placed match against Elsternwick at Elsternwick Park in the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association's south west division 1.

After losing the toss and being sent in to field, the Tigers had a reasonable start against their higher-placed opponent. "To bowl a side out on a high, dry day like we did was pleasing," coach Paul Murray said.

"We had them at 5-140 and we were looking to have them bowled out for 200, but our last 40 minutes let us down.

"They had a top-order batsman batting at No.9, so that didn't help us either."

In the end, the Tigers bowled Elsternwick out for 255.

Matthew Thomson took five wickets.

"Matthew was really good with the ball and was by far our best bowler," Murray said.

"He beat the bat quite a bit, bowling a real good spell in the hot weather.

"Even their No.3, who made 80-odd, struggled against him at the end of his innings, with Matthew beating the bat at least twice an over."

Murray and Jonathon Burton chipped in with two wickets each.

Despite the competitive total set by Elsternwick, Murray believes his side can make the runs.

"We will be batting in similar conditions and it is a good surface to bat on.

"Our top five batsmen will need to bat well, so we aren't leaving it to the tail-enders to try and get the runs."

Adam Duxson who is making his debut, will bat in the top five.

The Tigers have another match next week, a one-dayer against Williamstown.

"We are looking to win both our last two matches and think that we can do it," Murray said. "We have a few new players in the side and they have been playing well."

Despite being out of finals contention, the Tigers still have at least one set of bragging rights after defeating the football club in their twenty-20 clash.

"It was a bit of a hit and giggle that was a whole lot of fun," Murray said.

"They kept slipping over as most of them weren't wearing spikes."

"We just went for a bit of swing against them, and me top-scoring says a lot about their bowling.

"We now lead 2-0, and they will want to win it even more next year."
