Werribee Giants battle hard to beat Fitzroy

03 Feb, 2010 11:23 AM
WERRIBEE has been able to keep its winning streak alive after a hard-fought win over Fitzroy in State League division 2 at Merri Park in Fitzroy.

For the Giants, who are sitting on top of the ladder with 16 wins and only one loss, the match against Fitzroy, second on the ladder, saw them face tougher opposition than in previous weeks.

"It was a tough match against Fitzroy, which we were expecting," coach Earl Byrne said.

"It was good to get to play under some pressure, which will be good experience coming into finals."

Both teams started the match evenly which was to be expected, and were sitting at 4-4 after the sixth inning.

"We started all right, before Fitzroy got a few runs in the sixth inning and were able to level the score up," Byrne said.

"They had their tails up, but we were able to score four runs in the seventh inning.

"It was good to reply so quickly and stop their run before they kept going."

For the Giants a number of players put in good games, ensuring that they kept their winning streak alive.

"Darryl George pitched for the first six innings, conceding only nine hits and four runs," Byrne said. "Jonathon Lowe, who has been pitching well all season, then came in and had no runs in his three innings.

"Both Lewis Weldon and Daniel Wilkie had three hits each in good games."

The win against Fitzroy leaves the Giants in a good position to secure top spot, but it means nothing come finals time.

"We can finish with 25 wins and one loss, but if we don't perform in finals it means nothing," Byrne said.

The Giants' next match is a night encounter against Port Melbourne

at Melbourne Ball Park.
