TABLE toppers Werribee Giants have made a "massive improvement" from last season, says coach Earl Byrne.
He is "really impressed" by his side's near-perfect start to the 2009-10 Baseball Victoria State League division 2 season.
The Giants have already beaten last season's total of nine wins by notching up 12 wins in 13 games and Byrne is confident the young squad can continue producing "excellent results".
"We set a goal to be in a good position by this time in the season and I think we have done better than I expected," Byrne said.
"It will be a big test for us to see if we can back up what we've done so far after Christmas, but the players have the will to win and they always roll into games thinking they will win."
"I think we can do it."
Byrne credits much of his side's success to star import Mike Baillargeon, whose professionalism has rubbed off on the younger players in the squad.
"He wants to play all the time and he's a fantastic leader who the other players follow, and I think we need someone like him at the club," Byrne said.
"He's also a really good guy off the field and he's easy to coach, as he does whatever I ask him to do.
"He eats baseball and I think his attitude to the game rubs off on the other guys."
Byrne also hails the impact of 18-year-old catcher Oliver Box, whom other players "seem to follow" because of his strong leadership skills and professional approach.
"Oliver has stepped up to the plate since returning from America midway through last season and the other guys who are his age like to follow him as he's become a bit of a leader for us," Byrne said.
The Giants face a tricky task after Christmas when their fixture list will be clustered with midweek games, but Byrne says "they will get through it."
