THE Werribee Giants are guaranteed promotion to the Baseball Victoria division one competition after they secured top spot in division 2 with a 7-1 victory over the Waverley Wildcats on Sunday.
John Curnow was the star of the show for the Giants giving up only one run in nine innings of pitching, and hitting a three-run homer to help his side get across the line.
Brothers Wade and Ryan Balzer also starred, both notching up several hits.
With three matches still to play, coach Earl Byrne is concerned his side may take "the foot of the pedal" and he will do his best to ensure they don't take the matches lightly.
"We play Ormond this week and they are a bottom three side so it could be a dangerous match for us if we don't take them seriously," Byrne said.
"When you play teams like Ormond you can sometimes drop to their level and my role as a coach now is to try to avoid complacency and make sure my players never take it easy."
Byrne also views the next three fixtures as an opportunity to give players who don't normally feature a chance to get some game time while his regular performers can get a well-earned break.
"Coaching wise I get to try some different things out and put players in against different opponents to see if we can improve our approach before the finals," Byrne said.
"It will also be good to give 16 year old Darryl George a rest as he's complained about a sore elbow in recent weeks. He's an important player and I'd like to have him strong for the finals."
