Wear pink for a purpose

POINT Cook Community Learning Centre will turn pink next Monday to support breast cancer research.

The centre will host a Pink Ribbon Day morning tea to raise funds for The Cancer Council.

Wyndham Council and the Mental Illness Fellowship are hosting the morning tea, which is open to all residents.

People visiting the centre will also be able to buy Pink Ribbon merchandise.

The morning tea will start at 10.30 in the foyer of the centre and will include a pink-themed storytime for children and a craft activity for children.

Attendees are encouraged to wear pink.

BREAST CANCER FACTS

The exact cause of breast cancer is not known, but its risk is known to increase:

* As you get older.

* If you have a strong family history.

* If you've had breast cancer before.

Some other factors that may increase a woman's risk by a small amount include:

* Not having children, or having children after 30.

Early age at first period.

* Later age at natural menopause (55 years or older).

Alcohol.

* Obesity or gaining a lot of weight after menopause.

* Using the contraceptive pill - the risk is higher while taking the pill and for about 10 years after stopping.

* Using hormone replacement therapy - the risk increases the longer you take it, but disappears within about two years of stopping use.
