Tip-off results in big drug find

04 Nov, 2009 04:00 AM

A TIP-off by the public led to the discovery of a sophisticated hydroponic operation at a Hoppers Crossing house, where 141 cannabis plants were being grown.

Early on October 30, officers raided the Hogans Road property where they found the crops at various stages of maturity in three rooms, with an electrical bypass also in place.

A 22-year-old man and a 47-year-old man, both of Sunshine, were charged with trafficking, cultivating and the possession of cannabis along with theft of electricity.

Werribee's Sergeant Mick Knight estimated the value of the plants at more than $280,000. "It's the second-largest haul of the year, after we seized 170 cannabis plants from a house in Evrah Drive, Hoppers Crossing in August," he said.

"This particular raid was sparked following a phone call to Crime Stoppers from a person who reported suspicious activity at the house.

"It just shows that if you see or hear something, regardless of how insignificant you think it is, you should report it because it could be the missing piece of the puzzle."

Reports to Crime Stoppers can be made anonymously by calling 1800333000.
