RESIDENTS concerned about a proposal for a high-density development in Werribee say traffic will double if it goes ahead as planned.

Wyndham Council has received plans from Shaheen Holdings for a 105-lot residential subdivision on an eight-hectare farmland site between Walls and McGrath roads.

A group of affected residents met last Friday to discuss the proposal.

Several residents told the Banner they intended to fight the plans and would be lodging their objections with the council. Debbie Armstrong, whose home on Walls Road is opposite the proposed site, is concerned traffic on the narrow road will increase.

"It will double cars from 150 to 300. Already when there are cars parked either side, only one car can get up the middle," she said.

Trucks also used it as a thoroughfare, which was a dedicated bus route.

Ms Armstrong said the extra traffic would pose a risk to pupils attending nearby Thomas Chirnside Primary School. "Something like that should be built on a main road, not a residential road. It's going to be a nightmare.

The development is proposed to be built behind Margaret Farquhar's home in the existing estate.

"We knew it was going to eventually be built, just not to this level of density.

"It's going to have 10 dwellings, and a lot of the units will be two storeys, right at my back fence."

Wyndham Council's sustainable development director, Greg Aplin, said the process for assessing the application was in its early stages.

Affected residents had been notified and had until early February to comment on the proposal. The application can be viewed at council offices, 45 Princes Highway, Werribee.
