THE 2010 equestrian calendar has kicked off in impressive fashion, with more than 1250 horses and their trainers converging on Werribee Park at the weekend for the Royal Melbourne Horse Show.
The four-day event wrapped up on Tuesday, with standardbreds, Shetlands, hackneys, Haflingers, palominos and pintos all taking centre stage. The event was held at the National Equestrian Centre, making it the biggest show in Australia.
A towering steel grey warmblood was awarded the best of show championship. War Wind qualified by winning the class for show hunter geldings over 15 hands, going on to win the supreme led show hunter. War Wind was exhibited by Shae Hanger of Moorooduc, who also won the Garryowen with the horse at the 2008 show.
More than 40 breeds were on show, with classes for the best-presented exhibits also on offer. A section for the best handlers was also introduced.
