VOLUNTEERS at Wyndham's community radio station will get more air time when a second studio opens in three weeks.
The new WynFM studio, which will provide additional space for pre-recording interviews and training, has been under construction for six months.
It will be named in honour of the late Ray Humphriss, a well-known local activist who protested tirelessly against a toxic waste dump coming to Werribee during the Kennett years.
Mr Humphriss died in December.
Marketing manager and host of the International Caravan program Duane Zigliotto said Mr Humphriss had a long association with WynFM.
"He was with the station from day one, and put a lot of time into it over 15 years. He was a committed community man, so it's a very fitting dedication."
He said the new studio, funded by advertising, community contributions and a State Government grant, had been long-awaited.
"We lost some of our training capacity when we replaced two older studios with one modern, digital studio two years ago. We've been desperate to get this second studio up and running so we can diversify content, and get more volunteers on board."
Mr Zigliotto said the current line-up of presenters was like a "minestrone" of radio content, with the station broadcasting a range of programs from country music and popular request, to talkback and local sport coverage.
"We've got a bit of everything here.
"We have people presenting shows about pop, folk, country, local issues and sport. We've got shows in other languages including Vietnamese, Italian, and Macedonian."
In addition to the new studio, station volunteers are planning to raise its profile with an end-of-year concert.
"We plan to get local musician Scott Dann to headline a concert we would broadcast live, hopefully with the support of local community groups and council." In the meantime, WynFM volunteers are busy putting the final touches on the studio, and preparing for live coverage of the Weerama Festival where they will launch an outside broadcast caravan.
