Inmate stabbed

A 22-YEAR-old inmate was stabbed in a frenzied attack at Port Phillip Prison in Truganina last Wednesday.

The man was with other prisoners in a yard about 6pm when he was struck up to six times in the upper chest with an unknown weapon. He was taken to the Royal Melbourne Hospital in a non-life-threatening condition and treated for what were described as superficial injuries. Werribee police attended the prison and spoke to inmates following the incident. No arrests have been made at this stage.

Active school

WERRIBEE Primary School has been recognised for its commitment to encourage its pupils to make healthy eating choices and take part in physical activity.

Since it signed up to the State Government's Kids Go for Your Life program the school has introduced a number of initiatives designed to improve their lifestyle.

Teacher Jo-anne Wembridge said the school's new active policy had been a major success.

"Every Wednesday is Walking Wednesday and pupils can meet one of our teachers at Chirnside Park before school and everyone walks together," she said.

"The children enjoy walking with their friends, and we've noticed that the fresh air and physical activity in the morning helps them feel awake and alert.

"We've also introduced a fun Frequent Rider Passport for pupils who cycle to school. Each pupil gets their passport 'clicked' when they ride to school, and there are prizes for the most active rider."

Access to sports

WYNDHAM residents are being encouraged to have their say on the need to develop more sport and recreation opportunities across the city for people with a disability.

The surveys will be carried out over the coming months as part of a YMCA Access for All Abilities program.

Pilot help

ASPIRING Australian pilots will now be eligible for

fee-help in the RMIT's Point Cook flight training program -Australia's only fee-help option for domestic flight students. When the course starts in February, full-fee paying domestic students will be able to apply for fee-help, as part of the Federal Government's 2010 VET Skills Reform package. The RMIT pilot training diploma, based at the Point Cook airfield, costs between $70,000 and $75,000, on top of an initial enrolment and administration fee of $5000. That amount will be covered by fee-help, a HECS-style loan. Students will still need to pay for incidental costs such as uniforms, examination fees and the pilot's licence which costs $3000.
