Gas blast throws traffic into chaos

18 Nov, 2009 10:26 AM
A GAS mains explosion during roadworks on Friday sent a cloud of gas towards a residential development and caused traffic mayhem.

Traffic was closed to Sneydes Road for almost two hours while emergency crews repaired the ruptured main and returned the area to safety.

The Point Cook CFA, two MFB units and Werribee police attended the scene.

Point Cook fire officer Greg Hill said: "A construction crew was working on a water main and the gas pipe was accidentally hit.

"It was quite a major line, there were rocks coming out of the hole when it exploded. The guys on the building site next door did well to shut their generator down straight away."

They said the explosion was as high as a street light.

Mr Hill said crews had to deal with all sources of possible ignition, such as timber and electricity in the neighbouring construction site.

"We warned all the residents about the gas leak, while police and council officers redirected traffic. An ambulance was also called in on standby.

There were no reports of any injuries.
