Arrest after high-speed chases

10 Mar, 2010 12:00 AM
A HOPPERS Crossing teenager has been charged after he allegedly led police on three high-speed pursuits, including one in a stolen car, in which he was clocked at speeds of up to 180kmh.

Police said two cars were caught drag racing on Old Geelong Road about 10pm on February 15, after which the 18-year-old man led officers on a wild chase along the Princes Freeway.

He abandoned his car at the intersection of Fitzgerald and Kororoit Creek roads and was arrested a short time later.

In the second incident, police attempted to stop the man to impound his maroon-coloured early-model Holden Commodore as it travelled Werribee-bound on the Princes Freeway, near the Kororoit Creek Road exit, at Laverton North. After he was pulled over, the man approached the police car and allegedly reached through the driver's side window and switched off the ignition.

He then took off in his car towards Werribee, reaching speeds of 150kmh in the emergency lane, before police called off the pursuit.

In the third incident, police again tried to intercept the man in Gordon Street, Footscray.

He allegedly reached speeds of up to 120kmh in a 60kmh zone, before moving onto the Princes Freeway, where he was clocked at more than 150kmh during the pursuit as it headed towards Geelong before being called off.

The man had turned his headlights off in an attempt to evade detection, police said.

He was arrested at his Hoppers Crossing house last Friday and charged with car theft, along with a range of other offences, including driving while disqualified, resisting arrest and evading police.

His car was seized.

The man was remanded in custody and was due to appear at the Sunshine Magistrates Court on Tuesday.
